Floating Box: A Unique Office Design by Teng-Syu Tseng

Creating a Lightweight and Imaginative Workspace

The design team behind Floating Box utilized the original double-height space to divide the office into upper and lower areas. Steel wire materials were used to support a suspended hollow staircase, while transparent imaginary lines were laid out to define secret office spaces and customer corridors.

One of the standout features of Floating Box is the use of black glass to divide the supervisor's office and the employee's office vertically. This creates a visually striking contrast and adds a touch of sophistication to the overall design.

The office TV wall, which serves as an outer screen, showcases the natural cement plain color of the concrete used during construction. This choice highlights the purity and simplicity of the materials, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal of the space.

Despite its simplicity, Floating Box is a testament to the power of thoughtful design. By utilizing lightweight materials and clever spatial arrangements, Tseng has created a visually light and inviting workspace.

The design technique used in the office area on the second floor is particularly noteworthy. Steel wire and iron were used to create a concept of "holding up" the office box, while glass and iron were used to achieve a visually light suspension. The mezzanine, designed in an L-shape, retreats layer by layer towards the connection of the hollow staircase, preventing the second-floor office space from overwhelming the first-floor area.

Floating Box was completed in November 2020 in Taoyuan City, Taiwan. The design team faced challenges in utilizing the limited space effectively. However, by taking advantage of the double-height space and incorporating clever design solutions, they were able to create a functional and visually stunning office environment.

Tseng's design for Floating Box has received recognition and acclaim, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This award acknowledges the innovative and creative approach taken by Tseng in creating a space that combines art, science, design, and technology to enhance the quality of life for its users.
